The Medical Communications Manager, MCM, provides strategic and technical leadership to the Sr Medical Communication Leads across aligned therapy area(s) or product(s), and hold primarily Medical Communications responsibility for certain product(s) or therapy area(s).

As primary responsible for their TA(s)/product(s), the Medical Communications Manager plays a crucial role in the Medical Communications capability of the organization and is an integral part of the Medical Integration Team (MIT) in their respective therapeutic area (TA). They will lead the development and execution of the localized, therapeutic area(s) and associated product(s) specific, cross-functional Medical Communications plans, aligned to the Business Plan and Medical Affairs Strategy. They will build and maintain consolidated scientific knowledge for their area by identifying, analyzing and integrating scientific information. They will leverage internal digital knowledge management systems and contribute to their further enhancements to elevate omnichannel evidence dissemination.

As a team leader, MCM is responsible for setting the direction for their team as well as drive the integration of the Medical Communication plans and processes with other Business plans and MIT Plans and timelines. The individual maintains understanding of professional medical communication practices across industry as well as in other regions across JNJ and drives enhancements to Medical communication practices within the team, while ensuring all activities in their teams comply with local regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a localized, therapeutic area(s) and associated product(s) specific, cross-functional annual Medical Communications Plan, aligned to the Business Strategy and as part of the Medical Affairs Plan.
  • Support Medical Director to integrate global core asset themes and locally generated evidence into strategic Business Planning & Campaign planning
  • Engage with Patient Value Teams on Claims and Materials upstream in the content development process.
  • Maintain understanding of product knowledge and labeling, associated disease states, relevant literature, treatment guidelines, competitor information, and Commercial and Medical strategies and tactics for assigned therapeutic area(s).
  • Own, develop, and manage the scientific content library
  • Map and leverage relevant content created outside Canada to streamline local content creation
  • Lead the execution of content development or localization in alignment with the Medical Communications strategy and as per need eg. Congress support, MSL external communication, persona related assets, in alignment with business strategy and campaign planning leveraging publications & IEGP outputs
  • Flagging and tagging of content developed by them while submitting for review and submission in iMK, as per SOP requirement
  • Collaborate with agencies as per need for MedSci content creation
  • Ensure relevant scientific information for specific therapeutic area(s) and associated products is made available to internal audiences as validated and appropriate Medical Communication deliverables.
  • Review and approve materials according to pertinent procedural documents
  • Collaborate with Medical Excellence team to track external impact and internal engagement metrics of the Medical Communications deliverables and continue to optimize plan and assets
  • Upscale scientific knowledge and competencies of the organizations through cross-functional trainings as per the learning plan
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Medical Communication Professionals
  • Collaborate with the Director - Med Info & Communications to guide the strategic direction of the Team, integrating Johnson & Johnson Credo and Leadership Imperatives into team goals and decision making
  • Continuously evaluate the market trends related to medical communications and apply advanced knowledge of professional medical communication practices to inform the execution and improvement of medical communication plans
  • Create a culture of innovation, collaboration, and excellence within the team
  • Work closely with Operations personnel and Director to establish functional processes, SOPs, and socialize ways of working with cross-functional teams
  • Establish and implement fundamental standards and best practices for team, develop best in class key performance indicators that monitor, track, and evaluate the effectiveness of the medical communication plans
  • Facilitate scientific and skill training for the Team and support professional development through mentoring and coaching
  • Contribute to development and oversight of the annual budget for team


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy, Life Sciences or another healthcare profession is required. Post-graduate scientific degree (Pharm.D., M.Sc. or Ph.D) or medical degree (M.D.) is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Required:

  • Minimum of 5 years of industry experience in areas such as Medical Affairs, Medical Information/ Communications, Clinical Operations, or similar role)
  • Ability to research, identify, analyze and synthesize information from multiple data sources
  • Strategic mindset and ability to translate Medical Affairs strategy to Communication Plans
  • Ability to adapt data to the audience and communicate it concisely as required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and educational skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills: manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work effectively in matrix project team environment
  • Must be proficient in medical content creation, medical writing and/or innovative assets development leveraging common software (Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, Adobe Pro etc.) and familiarity with other digital communication formats.
  • Strong leadership capabilities and excellent interpersonal skills
  • An ability to promote team cooperation and a commitment to team success
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain a big picture orientation
  • Ability to influence stakeholder decisions and communicate with impact

Preferred:

  • 2-3 years of experience in leading teams is preferred
  • Experience in immunology, oncology or hematology preferred
  • MSL or equivalent experience in relevant therapeutic area is an asset

Other:

  • Bilingualism in English and French is an asset
