As part of the Transmission Protection, Automation, and Control Product Line (TX PAC PL) team, the Product Applications Engineer (PAE) will be responsible for defining & delivering a differentiated protection relay offer for the product applications and software-defined substation automation solutions for grid digitalization offering leading to sustainable and profitable growth.
The PAE will be responsible to shape and execute the technical strategy of our GridBeats iDS portfolio both at a system and individual component level.
The successful candidate will interact particularly with the Product Management "vertical" PL Leaders, the Product Management Leader, Product Managers (PMs), R&D Leaders, the Region Growth Leaders, the regional Technical Application Engineering communities, and regional application / sales experts.

Scope:
As part of the Transmission Protection, Automation, and Control Product Line (TX PAC PL) team, the Product Applications Engineer (PAE) will be responsible for defining & delivering a differentiated protection relay offer for the product applications and software-defined substation automation solutions for grid digitalization offering leading to sustainable and profitable growth. The PAE will be responsible to shape and execute the technical strategy of our GridBeats iDS portfolio both at a system and individual component level. He/she will interact particularly with the Product Management "vertical" PL Leaders, the Product Management Leader, Product Managers (PMs), R&D Leaders, the Region Growth Leaders, the regional Technical Application Engineering communities, and regional application/sales experts.
Job Description
Major Responsibilities:
- Progress the release of relay applications and software-defined substation automation solutions aligned with the relevant operating rhythms for the portfolio, including multi-generation product plans, business plans, and NPI cycles.
- Drive GridBeats Integrated Digital Substation (iDS) system and iDS product level application strategy, worldwide in coordination with Grid Automation regions.
- Support the PMs in developing the product/solution strategy, including product lifecycle management, multigenerational product plans, market segmentation & positioning, renewables strategy, go to market strategy and pricing; in order to acquire new customers and grow the installed base. Support customer connections to link performance with customer expectations.
- Support the PMs to promote an impactful product/solution offering in analyzing and providing feedback on the in-depth technical/functional requirements from the market as specified mainly by the SDSU Regional teams, technology progression, industry norms and standards advancements, competitor analysis (product gaps), personal/team expertise, and opportunities for differentiation and revenue growth.
- Support communication and cascading the activity offering and value proposition to the various Grid Automation and Solutions Regions. Support delivery of detailed product/application training for Sales personnel and directly to customers where required eg APPS course
- Support technical aspects of product launches eg product manuals, technical/application ppts etc
- Support investigations on product application issues where required. Timely response to regions on field issues, closing out ACT actions on time, provide expertise for risk assessments and prioritization of maintenance releases
- Author and present Expert level conference papers on the products and solutions, write magazine technical articles. Support Sales with in-depth product knowledge and arbitrate on technical support issues, capitalizing on team knowledge.
- Attend and actively participate in industry WGs and committees eg CIGRE, IEEE
- Give high-level input to customer homologations and V&V use cases and test specifications.
- Partner with the Grid Solutions Marketing team to ensure the best image, impact and professionalism of the products viewed in all media (from printed documentation through to powerpoints, videos, Apps, other collateral and the www.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college
- Min 5 years of experience of product management, product marketing and/or technical application, in grid automation portfolios.
- Good knowledge of Power System and Protection Applications for Transmission, Generation, Distribution, Industry and Rail segments.
- Specialist knowledge of utility, industrial and rail Grid Automation markets and their technologies.
- Ability to work effectively across functions.
- Appreciation of pricing, costs and product accounting.
- Excellent written/oral communication and interpersonal skills, customer focused, enthusiastic.
- Familiarity with several of the following protocols is also required: IEC61850, IEC 103, Modbus, DNP3.0, TCP/IP, Ethernet
- Willingness and ability to travel 25% of the time.
Desired
- Total 10 years of experience in industry related sales, marketing, applications or product management.
- Previous experience in product management practices and activities within GE, together with commercial customer knowledge and established relationships. Techno-commercial awareness.
- Strong analytical skills with ability to identify and explain critical issues.
- Must be able to handle multiple projects simultaneously within stringent time constraints, requires discretion and independent judgment, and the ability to maintain a good working relationship with all co-workers, stakeholders and clients.
- Knowledge of Product Development Process related to embedded and PC based software and hardware in the Grid Automation protection and control field.
- Ability to work effectively across functions.
- Familiarity with product Quality metrics.
- Six Sigma and/or Fastworks training would be a bonus.
