ASML is seeking a material science intern with expertise in glass and ceramic processing, micromachining and microstructuring. This person will join the Advanced development center in Wilton, Connecticut - A Research and development team focused on proto-typing of next generation wafer/reticle clamping systems.

Role and responsibilities

The main focus of this position will be:
  • Preparation of glass and ceramic structured prototypes including samples for process development.
  • Micro-machining (laser, ion beam, waterjet), grinding and polishing, coating and etching of those prototypes and samples.
  • Investigate material issues / challenges using appropriate material diagnostic tools such as SEM , AFM , WLI etc
  • Conduct stress simulations
  • Clearly communicate progress and status of ongoing technical activities to project team;
  • Support preparation of design reviews for the development team

Education and experience

  • Must be pursuing a degree in Material Science or similar discipline (Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering with Tribology focus). Masters or PhD, preferred.

Skills

  • Strong background of course work both experimental and research background in materials science of glass and ceramics (such as SiC, SiSiC etc), formation, micromachining and microstructuring.
  • Knowledge in material and material interaction (especially glass, ceramics, thin film materials, gases, etc); with deep understanding of the fundamentals of friction and wear processes of metallic, ceramic, and polymeric materials
  • Excellent knowledge of electro-optical, mechanical properties of coatings and ceramic structure
  • Hands on experience with micromachining methods for glass and ceramics (Ion beam, laser, water jet etc)
  • Dry and wet etch knowledge a plus.
  • Experience with grinding and polishing of glass and ceramics
  • Theoretical and experimental working understanding with various coating deposition equipment (e.g., Sputter, E-beam, PECVD etc.).
  • Good understanding and experience in verification methods (microscopy, white light interferometer, microscope, SEM, AFM, TOF-SIMS, XPS etc)
  • Experienced in MATLAB, Python or other similar coding and simulation SW a plus.
  • Ability to work in the clean room environment.
  • Excellent experimental skills
  • Be able to interface with multidisciplinary groups and work effectively in a team and be willing to take on responsibility, proactive and follows through on commitments
